Presentations

Disaster Action has participated in seminars, conferences and training events on the human aspects of disaster response around the UK, in Europe and worldwide for police, local authorities, the voluntary sector, universities and private companies for over 25 years.

The purpose of such presentations is to give delegates insight into the personal impact of disaster, and the role that delegates may be able to play in ameliorating the experience of others in the future. Presentations can be designed for a range of audiences, including for those responsible for strategic planning around humanitarian assistance and for those who will be working on the frontline.

This is a personally demanding task that can have a powerful impact on delegates. Individuals’ credibility lies in our direct experience of disaster and our capacity to engage with an audience not as trainers but as those with experience that is relevant to the roles and responsibilities of the emergency planning and responding agencies.

Presentations are informed by both the speaker's individual experiences and common experiences across disasters and highlight generic and consistent messages around a rights-based approach to:

  • Access to information
  • Practical and financial help
  • Openness, sensitivity
  • Informed choice
  • Non-judgmental assistance
  • Medical care
  • Emotional first aid/psychological support
  • Respect for individual difference/privacy/dignity.
